29: THROW OUT THE SCRIPT AND MAKE YOUR OWN RULES!

Oooh are you in for a treat! Postpartum doula, childcare provider, improviser, runner, future queer parent, and diet culture dropout Kiki Mikkelsen joins us to talk about caring for others, operating with integrity, tuning out all of the voices around you, listening to your gut, navigating family planning as a queer couple, and throwing out the script and deciding what’s best for you. What feels right in your body. Kiki lives in Brooklyn with her wife and their 2 cats, Finnigan and Dad.

I had the honor of meeting Kiki through Musical Improv at the Magnet Theater here in NYC. We’ve made up musicals together, we’ve hung out on rooftops, and she’s cared for Everett when we need support. Kiki is an endlessly talented human being whose energy feels like home.

You’ll notice I call myself out twice during the episode for asking about Kiki’s family planning. She and I spoke about it before the interview so she’s given me permission to speak about this personal topic which if you listened to episode 26: Why we have to stop asking people when they are having a baby, you know is a hot topic for me. And as I say in the episode, Kiki is NOT the spokesperson for all queer couples. Only herself.

I think it’s important to highlight that we can often feel more curious or entitled to information about someone’s family planning when it doesn’t include a P and a V. These conversations are important and I urge you to learn more. BUT! Be aware and considerate of who, how, and why you are asking someone. You are not entitled to that information.

With that said, let’s get this party started…
