Stop Googling Your Body: Why Listening to Yourself Beats Internet Advice

Have you ever read a post that made you second-guess your body? Maybe it said:

  • “Women over 40 shouldn’t do HIIT.”
  • “Running long distances raises cortisol too much.”
  • “Cardio isn’t good for aging bodies.”

Suddenly, the movement you love — whether it’s running, dancing, strength training, or cycling — feels like it might be “wrong.”

Here’s the truth…

If you love running, run.

If HIIT makes you feel alive, do it.

If walking is your happy place, that’s enough.

The problem isn’t the movement itself — it’s that we’ve learned to trust the internet more than we trust our own bodies.

And that disconnection is holding us back.

The Problem with Outsourcing Your Body to the Internet

The internet is full of fitness advice, especially for women over 40. And while some of it is based in science, much of it is clickbait designed to play on fear, shame, or self-doubt.

When you blindly follow one-size-fits-all rules, you stop listening to the signals your body is already giving you. And that disconnect leads to burnout, injury, and frustration.

Why Smart Watches Can’t Replace Self-Awareness

Fitness trackers can measure steps, calories, or heart rate. But they can’t tell you how rested you feel. They can’t measure your joy after dancing with friends or the calm you get from a long run.

Your body is the most advanced biofeedback system you’ll ever have. And unlike your smart watch, it never lies.

Why Listening to Your Body Matters (Especially for High Achievers)

If you’re a high achiever, parent, or type-A professional, you’ve probably mastered the art of ignoring your body. You push through exhaustion, override hunger cues, and sacrifice rest in the name of productivity.

But ignoring your body’s wisdom doesn’t make you stronger. It makes you more vulnerable to stress, illness, and burnout.

The truth is: your body already tells you what you need. You just have to practice listening.

Your Body is Giving You Data Every Day

Think about it:

  • Your energy levels tell you if you’re recovered or depleted.
  • Your mood tells you if something lit you up or drained you.
  • Your muscles tell you if you need more strength or more rest.

The question is — are you paying attention?

Now, unlike so many blog posts on these topics, this isn’t the end of this post. Not only would I not leave you hanging like that, I’m going to share 3 ways you can start listening to your body TODAY that you can actually integrate into your day.

And there’s no reason to get weird about it. This doesn’t have to be a huge time suck, overnight overhaul, or extreme change.

Why? Because then it will never happen and I think done is better than perfect.

3 Ways to Listen to Your Body Instead of the Internet

Here are three ways to reconnect with your body’s wisdom:

1. Morning Scan

Take 1 minute each morning to check in. Before you grab your phone, close your eyes and scan your body. Start at the top of your head and move down through your body. Notice tension, energy, or emotions.

Then finish this sentence: “My body feels…”

This simple practice helps you catch what your body is actually asking for.

2. Ask Before You Act

Consent is everything. Make sure you’re getting it from yourself! Before choosing a workout, ask yourself: What do I need today — rest, strength, or movement? Sometimes your body will crave a sweaty HIIT session. Other days, a walk in the sun will be exactly right. Other days, a nap is where it’s at!

3. Track Joy, Not Calories

Instead of obsessing over calories burned or miles logged, notice how you feel during and after your workout. Do you feel energized? Calm? Joyful? These results matter more than numbers on a screen.

The Real Results: What Happens When You Trust Yourself

My clients are proof that trusting your body works. When they learn to value their own wisdom alongside the knowledge of experts they choose to collaborate with, everything shifts:

  • They move from burnout to balance.
  • They feel stronger, more resilient, and more alive.
  • They create sustainable habits that last far longer than any internet trend.

Because when you trust your body, you stop fighting yourself — and that’s when real strength begins.

The Bottom Line…

The internet can’t tell you what your body needs. Only you can.

So the next time you’re tempted to Google whether you should or shouldn’t do something, pause and ask your body instead.

She knows more than your smart watch.

She knows more than Instagram.

Your body is the boss. And when you trust her, you don’t just move better — you live better.
