38: (UN)REMARKABLE: WHAT ARE WE NOT NOTICING?
December 20, 2021
One of my favorite musical improv games we play as a team is this game where we do an opening number to a musical AS someone from the team. We are singing, dancing, speaking, and performing like one person from the team. This may sound terrifying, but it’s magical.
This isn’t about making fun of someone. It feels really celebratory. And when we would do an opening number as ME, it was mind blowing. There are so many things I do habitually without thinking about them that I have no idea that I’m doing! It was through these exercises that I realized I really do have specific mannerisms, speak with my hands A LOT, LOVE a pivot step, and that when I’m excited about an idea I’ll share by starting with “Guys. Guys! GUYS! GUYS!!!!!!!!!”
There was always something new to learn about myself when my team reflected me back to me.
Does that make sense?
And this happened recently in my Storytelling class with Carly Ann Filbin of Written in Brooklyn. I told a story about my fears and anxieties before my second wedding and how the stress led to an eye injury that’s hilarious. I thought that was the part of the story that was special.
But after sharing in class, it was reflected back to me that the part of the story that was compelling wasn’t the black eye (you’ll have to listen to learn more), but the self doubts I had about marrying Jeremy. No doubts in Jeremy. Lots of doubt in myself. Because I’d been married before and made a whole slew of mistakes. How could I be sure I wasn’t messing up again? How could I be sure Jeremy really loved me and wouldn’t abandon me? How could I be sure that my trauma and baggage wouldn’t pollute this? Us? Him?
Anyway, the episode is really good and listen to the end because I have a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!
