01: THE VENN DIAGRAM OF MOTHERHOOD
April 5, 2021
Talking to actual rocket scientist Heather Bottom, a Space Systems Engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA, who recently finished working on the operations team for the launch and landing team of the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover. Previously, Heather worked at SpaceX on the Crew Dragon capsule, which has now launched US astronauts to the ISS and returned them safely back to Earth. Her degrees include a masters in Space Engineering from California Institute of Technology and a bachelors in Astrophysics from Columbia University. While attending college, she pursued a career in professional performing as a Radio City Rockette and in the Broadway National Tour of A Chorus Line. Today she works-from-home in Hilo, Hawaii with her 5-month-old daughter, Maria Alexandra. Maria loves the warm ocean water and attempting to move; she’s a ball of smiles and energy.
We talk about everything from the pressure of perfection in motherhood, show biz, and work to WANTING to go back to work after kids, finding parallels between various parts of yourself, and how it all comes together in a sort of 3D printed venn diagram.
Heather also shares the best advice she received before having Maria…(hint: it came from me).
