07: DID WE JUST BECOME BEST FRIENDS?
May 17, 2021
Making friends as an adult is…weird.
Making mom friends is weirder because you know you are both wondering how honest you can be with each other about what’s going on.
Also, sleep deprivation makes you straight up dumb. So you’re also worried you’re going to say something really…dumb.
And you’ve been chugging coffee so you’re all pumped up about it.
But then other times you both start laughing when your kid falls off the slide or tries to eat something weird. And sparks fly.
She says something about how toddlers are basically drunk and high and you get butterflies in your belly.
She writes an article and you feel SO seen and SO understood and you SWEAR she read your journal to research said article.
That’s how I felt when I first read this article by Abby Rasminsky.
I then went on to read everything of hers I could find on the internet and started following her on instagram.
And commenting.
And then I sent her a DM asking her to be on the podcast.
Maybe this sounds stalker-ey, it definitely does, but I knew we were destined to be friends.
I knew it was besheret (yiddish for meant to be).
Abigail Rasminsky is a writer, teacher, editor and former professional dancer. She works as a Lecturer in the Program in Narrative Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. She also teaches creative writing to medical students in the HEAL (Humanities, Ethics/Economics, Arts and Law) Program at Keck, and writing workshops from her home.
You can find her writing in the New York Times, The Cut, the Washington Post, Food52, Cup of Jo, Epicurious, Longreads, Dance Magazine, O: The Oprah Magazine, and more. She also writes a weekly newsletter called People + Bodies.
A native of Montreal, she lived in Brooklyn for 12 years before moving to Vienna, Austria. After four years as an expat, she now lives in Los Angeles with my husband and daughter.
I don’t want to give it all away, but chatting with her felt like reunited with a dear friend from a previous life.
