09: LOVE IS BETTER THAN PERFECT
May 31, 2021
I spent the first three decades of my life building a “perfect” life. And I think I did it because people thought I had it and would say things like “your life is perfect.” “You wouldn’t understand, your life is easy.” “I want what you have.”
Meanwhile I was miserable.
I wasn’t living MY perfect life. I was living the version fed to me through media, society, and what I perceived people expected of me.
Which is when I started to ask questions.
Who decided this is what I wanted?
Was it me?
Even if this was “perfect” before, is it still?
What do I want?
What do I need?
And I followed that. What I want and what I need.
Because it doesn’t matter what someone else’s idea of perfect or right is. If it’s not perfect or right for YOU, it’s wrong. That doesn’t mean it can’t be for them, but it doesn’t have to be for YOU.
Does that make sense?
Can you tell I’m getting fired up?
All of this is to say there is no ONE right way to do anything, there is only YOUR right way.
Reema and I discuss how we got to the point where we courageously, relentlessly, and unapologetically go after what is right for us.
And choosing love over perfection.
Reema is the author of the best selling memoir I’m Yours and upcoming novel Paramita. She is the head writer, creator, and an executive producer on the TV show SNAP. She is the host of the podcast Joy & Revolution with Reema Zaman.
Born in Bangladesh and raised in Thailand, Reema lives in Portland with her rescue chihuahua, Fia the Fierce.
Reema and I have been weaving in and out of each other’s lives for 19 years and I am so happy to share her love and brilliance with you.
We are both grateful for the lessons we’ve learned, the adversity we’ve faced, and every step that brought us here to this time and this version of ourselves. (If you’re Jewish this would be a good time to say the Shehecheyanu).
